Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation

Introduction

Anaesthesiology is a speciality that includes basic training in Physiology, Pharmacology and Anatomy, with knowledge of Internal medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics, and Surgery in its different specialities.

The basic mission of the Anaesthesiology Department is to make surgery possible, caring for and protecting the patient’s life during surgery using the safest procedures. To ensure the comprehensive care of the patient during surgery, the anaesthesiologist begins with a pre-operative assessment, estimating the anaesthetic-surgical risk, pre-operative treatments and anaesthetic premedication. Using this prior knowledge of the patient, he or she will make a decision as to the most suitable type of anaesthesia, whether it be general, regional or local, combined, or sedation.

After surgery, the patient is taken to a post-anaesthesia recovery room. Sometimes, in the case of patients at risk or very significant surgeries, the patient is taken to a Post-operative Intensive Care Unit. The Anaesthesiology Intensive Care Unit also takes critical patients with other etiology; multiple trauma, bleeding, etc. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation forms part of the speciality and knowledge of the critical patient is essential for the specialist’s training.

Another responsibility of the specialist is the treatment of acute and chronic pain that does not respond to conventional treatment and/or requires special knowledge and techniques. This is basically performed in the hospitalisation units and Pain clinics.

Specialist Care

The physicians specialising in anaesthesiology in the department form part of multi-disciplinary teams for the diagnosis and treatment of complex surgical procedures: surgical procedures for intracranial vascular pathology, supra-aortic trunks, and aortic surgery, cardiac pathology corrections with and without extracorporeal circulation, oncological reconstructive microsurgery, pulmonary and tracheal resections, complex spinal osteosynthesis, treatment of osteoarticular infections; complex oncological abdominal surgery and transplants, among others.

Outpatient Area

The Endoscopy Unit has several consultation rooms and a small operating room, where different diagnosis procedures (e.g. Gastroscopies, colonoscopies, etc.) and therapeutic procedures (e.g. polyp removal, fitting of biliary or oesophagus prostheses, lymph node puncture by echo-endoscopy, etc.) are performed under sedation, conscious or unconscious.

These procedures are normally not overly invasive. The degree of sedation required ranges between simple relaxation to deep sleep, depending on the patient’s tolerance and on the length of the procedure. The role of the anaesthesiologist is to provide the comfort and certainty required by patients subjected to these tests. The Major Outpatient Surgery Unit is made up of 7 operating rooms and a post-anaesthesia recovery unit with 12 cubicles and a post-surgical care area with 24 cubicles. The surgical procedures not requiring hospitalisation include all the specialities.

Consultations will be online for a percentage of patients. During the pre-operative consultation, focus will be placed on explaining the surgical procedure along with the pre-anaesthesia nursing team. Pain control in the patient’s home is particularly promoted.
