A study led by the Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB) and the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) has discovered an encephalocele in the right temporal pole of the brain in some of patients.

Two patients have undergone resection of an encephalocele with optimal results by Dr. Fernández-Coello and Dr. Rosellón from the Neurosurgery service of the HUB.

Most epileptic seizures are not triggered by specific stimulus. But, in 1% of patients, it is triggered by intermittent light stimulation, showering with hot water, mathematical calculations, or eating act, among others.

The director of the Stroke Unit and the Neurovascular Programme at Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB), Pere Cardona, has been one of the members of the clinical trial team for the drug ApTOLL. This significantly reduces mortality and long-term functional disability. The results of the trial were presented at the International Stroke Conference, held in Dallas (USA) and organised by the American Heart Association (AHA)

The Catalan Health Service has designated the Pneumology Service of the Bellvitge University Hospital as a Unit of Clinical Expertise (UEC, for its acronym in Catalan) in three groups of adult respiratory rare diseases.

The team of spinal column surgeons of the Neurosurgery Service of the Hospital de Bellvitge, made up of Dr Luis López Obarrio, Dr Oscar Godino and Dr Gemma Blanch, performed the first endoscopic surgery for the resection of herniated discs on 20 January, a minimally invasive technique that allows for a better and faster recovery of the patient.

A study by the Bellvitge University Hospital, the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), the University of Barcelona, and CIBERSAM observes that children with increased volume of two prefrontal cortex structures respond better to cognitive behavioral therapy.

Predicting the patients that may benefit from the therapy would avoid costly trial and error processes and would permit correct those factors responsible for the therapy failure.

For the first time, Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB) has also topped the list in tissue donation in Catalonia.

In addition, it has become the second centre in Spain for controlled asystole heart transplants, with up to 7 operations.
