Bellvitge University Hospital has remained a leader in many of the indicators on organ and tissue donation as well as on transplants during the first half of 2021 in spite of the high demand for healthcare assistance caused by the Covid-19 pandemic
Specifically, during this first half year it has performed 105 kidney transplants (first centre in Catalonia), 25 liver transplants (second centre in Catalonia), and 16 heart transplants (first centre in Catalonia).
In addition, during the first six months of 2021 it has also been the leader in organ donations in Catalonia and the second Catalan hospital in tissue donations. In organ donation, in the first half year, 31 effective donors have been obtained, leading to the donation of 60 kidneys, 24 livers, 6 hearts, 30 lungs and 3 pancreases. Regarding tissue donation, 145 donors have donated 140 corneas, 25 musculoskeletal tissues, 20 valves, 20 skin and 9 vascular tissues.
We are grateful for the efforts of all the professionals at the centre, especially those dedicated to donation and transplantation, as well as for the generosity of the donors' families. All of them have made it possible to achieve excellent results in such a complex context.
