The multidisciplinary team from the Functional Unit of Transgender Surgery at Bellvitge University Hospital has celebrated the completion of its first 100 vaginoplasties. This milestone confirms the unit's expertise and establishes it as one of the leading centres in Catalonia for sex reassignment surgery.
Bellvitge is one of the hospitals designated by the Servei Català de la Salut as a reference centre for surgical care for transgender individuals, alongside Hospital Clínic and Hospital Germans Trias, with a unified waiting list for these procedures.
The hospital performed its first two sex reassignment surgeries in September 2019, and currently conducts an average of 20 feminizing genitoplasty procedures annually. Comprising professionals from Urology and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, along with a dedicated nurse, the Functional Unit of Transgender Surgery at Bellvitge University Hospital is a unique model in Spain for its multidisciplinary and cross-sectional approach.
Since the start of its complex genital surgery program, the vast majority of interventions have been performed via the perineal route, using the technique known as penile inversion vaginoplasty. Additionally, in 2022, the hospital launched its robotic sex reassignment surgery program, performing the first robotic surgery of its kind in Europe.
