The Catalan Society of Otorhinolaryngology has awarded the prize in the best publication of the year 2020 to Dr. Marta Fulla, specialist physician of the Otorhinolaryngology Service of our hospital.
The award has been granted to him as the first signatory of the article Human Papillomavirus and Factors Associated with Recurrence in Sinonasal Inverted Papillomas from Poland and Spain, published in Head and Neck Pathology.
Sinonasal inverted papilloma is a benign but locally aggressive tumor that has a tendency to recurrence and malignant transformation. The role of the human papillomavirus (HPV) in this tumor is controversial.
The work studied the prevalence and distribution of HPV in sinonasal inverted papilloma in two different geographic areas (Spain and Poland) and the association between tumor recurrence and virus infection, as well as other potential etiological factors. It included two retrospective cohorts of patients with this tumor, 46 from Spain and 33 from Poland, of which different data and samples were analyzed that were subjected to histopathological evaluation, DNA quality control and DNA-HPV detection by PCR, among others studies.
Among the different results, it stands out that only in four patients –two from each region– was human papillomavirus DNA detected. This low prevalence suggests that HPV is not a main etiology for the development of these lesions.
From here, more patients and additional biomarkers must be investigated to better understand predisposing risk factors.
