Rheumatology

Introduction

The Rheumatology Department meets the specialist healthcare needs of citizens in its area of influence and acts as a reference in complex (tertiary) pathologies for the hospitals in its surrounding area, while being involved in the education and research inherent to a university hospital.

Its healthcare revolves around all areas of rheumatology, the speciality dealing in medical diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connecting tissue.

This includes highly prevalent and very socially significant disorders, such as arthrosis, osteoporosis or fibromyalgia, chronic inflammatory diseases with the capacity to cause significant structural damage such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis, and disorders with a marked systemic component, such as lupus erythematosus, vasculitis and scleroderma.

The healthcare unit is formed by a hospitalisation area, an outpatients area, an additional examination clinic and a multi-purpose day hospital.

Research

Línies de recerca

  • Lines of the Rheumatology Department: rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, osteoporosis.
  • Lines in collaboration with other research groups at the University Hospital of Bellvitge:

- Systemic autoimmune diseases, with Dermatology, Internal Medicine, Nephrology and Pneumology.

- Imaging in musculoskeletal pathologies, with Radiodiagnosis.

- Osteoarticular infection, with the Infectious Diseases Department.

  • Lines in collaboration with external research groups. Established with participation involving national and international research networks, and work groups from the Catalan Rheumatology Society, the Spanish Rheumatology Society, and the European League Against Rheumatism.
  • The results have been published in top journals, indexed in the Science Citation Reports, a large part of which are in the first quartile (Q1). The department also regularly takes part in clinical trials promoted by the pharmaceutical industry.

Education

Degree Education

  • The teaching activity of the department is two-sided: one academic (graduate and post-graduate), which is provided at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona (Bellvitge Campus), and one involving specialist training, which is accredited by the National Rheumatology Speciality Commission to train residents.

Master's degrees and accredited courses

  • The department coordinates the teaching of the Master’s degree in Diagnostic Imaging of Rheumatic Diseases (Master’s degree in Advanced Medical Skills), which is given together with the Radiodiagnosis Department of our hospital. During the clinical internship, students make regulated rotations in outpatients and the hospitalisation floor. Active learning measures are used to teach the subjects.
