Neurotrophic factors are small proteins that regulate the growth and survival of neurons.

This IDIBELL and Bellvitge Hospital study shows that six variants of the gene family that codes for these factors are closely associated with more vulnerability to gambling addiction.

It has already shown that neurotrophic factors genes are related to these addictions, but this is the first study to describe the specific mechanism.

A study by Bellvitge Hospital, Idibell and the University of Barcelona identifies, through magnetic resonance imaging, significant differences in the connectivity of several subregions of the hippocampus between patients with epilepsy who, after surgery, suffer impairments in verbal learning and those who do not. These differences could be used as biomarkers for a personalized assessment of the risks of surgery that could help the final decision.

This June, professionals from the Pathological Gambling and Behavioural Addictions Unit of the Psychiatry Service of the Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB) have participated in two major professional meetings: the 9th National Congress on Diabesity, in Madrid, and the 7th International Conference on Behavioural Addiction, which has been held in Nottingham, United Kingdom.
